Post Office reminds holidaymakers about the importance of travel insurance as high levels of lost luggage are reported

Travellers urged to invest in travel insurance to cover their belongings

London, UK (PRWeb UK/PRWEB ) November 1, 2009 -- With the Christmas holiday season fast approaching, Post Office Travel Insurance is reminding holidaymakers about the importance of taking out travel insurance to cover their belongings should they be lost in transit. While the AUC has predicted that airlines could mishandle as many as 70 million bags by 2019 as the number of air passengers is set to double, research from Post Office Travel Insurance shows that nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of holidaymakers are still venturing abroad without travel insurance in order to save money.

Passengers not taking out travel insurance to protect their belongings may risk ending up further out of pocket as many underestimate the value of their luggage. Post Office Travel Insurance research reveals that the average passenger carries a whopping £1,113 value of items in their suitcase, but travellers could value their luggage contents at a much lower amount. This discrepancy between actual and perceived value of items can result in victims of lost luggage claiming for less on their travel insurance policy than their belongings are actually worth.

Rachel Croft, Head of Post Office Travel Insurance, said: "If you do find yourself arriving on holiday with nothing but your hand luggage, it's important you keep your receipts to claim back on any purchases you have to make to keep you going.

"Post Office Travel Insurance will pay out up to £250 if your belongings are lost for more than 12 hours on the outward journey. By law, airlines only have to cover a specified minimum for your baggage, so it's important to make sure you have travel insurance on luggage contents for loss, damage or delay."
