Skin Care Alert for Vegetarians: Protein Deficiency Causes Skin Sag

New York Day Spa owner, Dorit Baxter Urges Balance in Vegetarian Diets

(PRWEB) September 19, 2006 -- Skin care specialist Dorit Baxter, founder and owner of New York Day Spa, identifies protein deficiency as the cause of accelerated aging on the faces of vegetarian clients.

“I have observed a surprisingly high correlation between a specific form of facial fatigue -- a sagging of the skin incompatible with a relatively young age and active lifestyle -— and a vegetarian diet,” Baxter explains.

The observation prompted Baxter to query vegetarian clients concerned about sagging skin on specifics of their diet.

“Invariably I detect an insufficient consumption of protein in the dietary habits described,” Baxter reports. “Sagging skin results from a loss of elasticity; protein deficiency diminishes skin elasticity. The result is an older appearance.”

Baxter reminds vegetarians that it is easy to consume ample sources of protein without eating meat, poultry, fish or seafood. Nutritional guidelines recommend that between 10% and 35% of daily caloric intake come from protein, at least 46 grams for women, 50 grams for men. This required amount can be met by consuming only modest amounts of protein http://www.vnv.org.au/Nutrition/Protein.htm.

Even for a vegan (vegetarians who opt not to eat any dairy products), sufficient protein is easily available in a variety of eating plans (http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm#table1) so that there is no need to ever develop a protein deficiency.

“At New York Day Spa we convey to our skin care clients the pivotal role played by a balanced diet in derma health,” Baxter concludes. “We are convinced that everyone benefits from eating healthy, and that a vegetarian diet and a skin vibrant with elasticity are easily compatible.”
